A medical cannabis innovation center opens in Israel’s Negev desert

In a joint effort by BOL Pharma, Perrigo, OurCrowd and the Israel Innovation Authority, Israel’s first medical cannabis innovation center, CaNegev, was launched on Wednesday evening in Yeruham.

During the kick-off event, Yeruham Town Council Chairman Tal Ohana announced that Yeruham has received state approval to build two cannabis factories in the area next year.

The hub offers two main programs for entrepreneurs, one of which is for startups that receive funding for the company’s activities and professional advice from the various partners and the innovation authority in the first year.

The second program – the Entrepreneurship Program – will financially support start-ups receiving a living grant and a rental grant in Yeruham, as well as an advisory and mentoring program from leading researchers and professional staff at the incubator.

Israel Birnbaum, CEO of CaNegev, said during the event: “We all share the idea of creating something out of nothing. We have combined all the necessary factors to build the leading medical cannabis laboratory in Israel.”

“Ben-Gurion, who campaigned for the settlement and development of the Negev, once said:” History is not written – history is made “, and that is what we all do here in the Negev, in Yeruham – history! We created a tremendous growth engine for medical cannabis entrepreneurs and startups – we founded the CaNegev, “he added.

Ohana said: “This is a very exciting day for me. There are a lot of people sitting here who have taught me a lesson in leadership and, above all, in my duty as an entrepreneur.”

“When my grandparents came here in the early 1960s, they got an agricultural job that they had known for many years in the Sahara,” Ohana said. “Your vision is only becoming a reality today.

Listing the hub’s achievements and anticipated growth opportunities, Ohana said, “We have been able to obtain approval to build two medical cannabis factories, 600 pharmacists from across the country have been trained in a special academy that we have opened, and furthermore, we plan to commercialize agricultural land and advanced research laboratories this October. “

“We will continue to turn every stone in our journey to make the periphery a good place to live. This will not happen without quality jobs,” said Ohana. “I urge the new government to take action to boost the engines of growth here. The Negev is the settlement reserve of the State of Israel for the next 50 years of its life.

“I call on entrepreneurs with a technological dream in the biotech and pharma sectors to join us at CaNegev and get access to all of our infrastructure – especially the pharmaceutical industry, which is heavily invested in the incubator,” she concluded.

In order for an entrepreneur to be allowed to participate in a project in the incubator, he must first be assessed on the basis of the following characteristics: degree of innovation, intellectual property, proof of concept, demand for the product, size of the company market, competition, regulation, developer and adaptation to the founding strategy.
