Flavor and Fragrance Giant, Robertet, Dives Head-First Into French CBD

Robertet is the first major manufacturer to take make the leap into CBD in France. The leading aroma and flavor manufacturer has been interested in CDB for years, but has been unable to manufacture it in France until the passage of a recent decree legalizing it in the country. The company notes, however, that the cost price will be higher in France than for CBD from other regions.

Robertet, a world-leading manufacturer of aromas, perfumes, and active ingredients derived from natural raw materials, is the first major manufacturer to take the plunge into CBD France. Taking advantage of the decree of December 30, 2021, which authorizes French hemp growers to harvest hemp flowers and extractors to produce the famous CBD, an active ingredient with virtues presented as soothing, Robertet is starting its first production of cannabidiol made in France this week.

Robertet Estimates 20-30kg Pure CBD from One Ton of Raw Material

Recently, nearly a ton of raw material arrived at Robertet from the Grand Est region. It is, of course, limited as required by law to 0.3% THC, the psychotropic substance, and will be stored in warehouses in Robertet’s Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes) warehouses. “We should be able to produce, with such a quantity, between 20 and 30 kg of pure CBD”, said Olivier Maubert, who heads the food flavorings and well-being, health, and beauty active ingredients activities of Robertet.

Robertet’s CBD Extraction Activities Have Been a Long-Term Interest

For five years now, Robertet, which has a turnover of 600 million euros, has been interested in this promising active ingredient for its customers in the cosmetics or food industries looking for new products. Extraction activities have already been launched in the United States and Switzerland with local partners. Robertet has also filed a case with the European authorities under the “Novel Food” regulations, a prerequisite for the eventual use of CBD in food.

The company has also embarked on lobbying and co-founded the Union of Industrialists for the Valorization of Hemp Extracts (Uivec), which seeks to structure a French CBD production sector.

France Will Have a Higher Cost Price

“France is the leading hemp producer in Europe, there is a real industrial logic in promoting a sector which, in addition, is sustainable”, notes Robertet’s Olivier Maubert, extolling the merits of this “miraculous” plant which does not need water or inputs and fertilizes the land.” It does not find more favorable conditions than at the level of the 45th parallel.

The cost price of CBD made in France will be higher than products currently imported from the United States and Eastern Europe, due in particular to a lower CBD level. But Robertet’s customers want a local product.

For now, many manufacturers are still reluctant to take the plunge because of legal uncertainties. To overcome this reluctance, Robertet created last year with associates a start-up called “Wailer,” which has just released a relaxing cream for athletes based on CBD. For the moment, Robertet only markets it on the Internet and in a few specialized stores. Importantly, this product will serve as a “proof of concept” in the eyes of cosmetics manufacturers.
