The founder of Sol Cannabis talks about consumption lounges

Sol Cannabis is a pharmacy with an adjoining hybrid greenhouse that uses a combination of sun and light to grow around 30 strains of cannabis. The facility is located in the Washoe Valley, south of Reno – Photo courtesy of Sol Cannabis

Cannabis dispensaries in northern Nevada are usually well stocked and very similar to one another. A greeter checks your ID and lets you into the sales room where a budtender fills out your order from a menu, but Sol Cannabis in the Washoe Valley south of Reno is different in many ways.

When you enter Sol, huge windows offer a view of the hybrid greenhouse, which grows around 30 cannabis strains with a combination of natural and artificial light. Seeing so many cannabis plants spread out in a room the size of many gyms is impressive evidence of the legal status of cannabis and an unusual act of transparency.

Almost all legally grown commercial cannabis in Nevada is grown indoors under artificial light. Sol is one of the few growers in Nevada to take advantage of the sun, and possibly the only pharmacy in the state that allows customers to see the live plants they consume.

Sol is also locally owned, which is another rarity among cannabis companies operating in northern Nevada. Aside from a small number of indigenous operations, hedge funds largely own the cannabis industry in Nevada.

Sol is vertically integrated and grows and sells flowers and also makes its own concentrates, cannabis-infused gummy bears, tinctures and other products. Aside from the unforgettable view of the breeding facility, Sol differs from other pharmacies by another architectural feature, a huge deck accessible from the pharmacy.

The Washoe Valley and surrounding mountains offer ever-changing beauty, and Alexander hosts live music events on the huge deck. It does not take an active imagination to realize that the establishment is potentially well suited to become or part of a consumption lounge and that the ideal suitability is not accidental.

On June 6th, 2021, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed Act AB341, which sets the general requirements for licensing lounges for cannabis use.

Alexander is something of a visionary in the Nevada cannabis business. He chaired the Independent Laboratory Advisory Committee, a body that established testing standards for the state’s exemplary medical cannabis system. He plans to continue communicating with the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (CCB) and adding to the discussion on the consumption lounges as the CCB and communities work to develop the rules for the cannabis use lounges.

Ed Alexander recently stopped by the Reno Innovation Center and recorded the following interview …
